At least four people lost their lives in a tragic road accident along Chwele-Mayanja road. The accident which occurred on Saturday evening in Marakaru involved a Nissan Matatu with the registration number KCR 556Y from Bungoma Line Sacco that collided head on with a lorry that was heading to Bungoma.
According to the police report three people , two men and a 9 month-old baby died died on the spot and one person succumbed while receiving treatment in the hospital.
The matatu driver Mr. Fadhili Barasa who narrowly escaped death said he was on his way to Lwakhakha border from Bungoma town when he saw a lorry that veered off the road and hit his vehicle at the left side.
“It was around 3 pm I was driving to Lwakhakha but when I reached around the Marakaru bend, I saw the lorry heading to Mayanja, and it was drawing closer at a very high speed. It lost control and hit my vehicle from the left side,” said Mr. Barasa.
The casualties are receiving treatment in different hospitals, six of them being treated at Life Care hospital in Bungoma town where doctors say their condition is stable.
Former Lwandanyi ward Member of the County Assembly Mr. Nathan Obwana is among the four who perished in that accident, the bodies have been taken to Life Care mortuary. Police are hunting down the driver of the ill fated lorry who immediately took off after the accident.
