The national government is banking on the free Wi-Fi hotspots connectivity programme to boost efficient service delivery within its institutions besides enabling small and medium enterprises to engage in E-Commerce.
Speaking at the launch of the public Wi-Fi hotspot at Sikhendu market in Trans Nzoia, ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo said the free connectivity will equally assist the government to realize its Bottom-Up economic agenda.
“The programme is geared towards enabling economic growth through the digital superhighway which was part of the Bottom Up economic model by the Kenya Kwanza government,” said CS Owalo after the launch.
Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha said the 100,000 community health promoters who will be unveiled by the government in October 2023 will bank on the Wi-Fi hotspots to upload data through their smart phones.
“Each community health promoter will be having a gadget for the collection of health data in homesteads. They will rely on the public Wi-Fi hotspots to relay the collected data to a central portal,” said Ms Nakhumicha.
The Ministry of ICT will also launch 1450 ICT hubs across the country in partnership with county governments and Members of Parliament to enable youths to generate income through digital income.
The Free Public Wi-Fi Hotspot is among the 25,000 Hotspots being rolled out countrywide, in part fulfillment of the Kenya Kwanza Government’s Digitalization Agenda.
