Friends church to improve education standards
Friend’s church (Quakers) has promised to improve education system in the schools they sponsor in the country.
According to the National Chairman of the Education Commission of the Friends secondary schools Jason Wekesa, the church has been working closely with other stakeholders in the education system to ensure the quality of education in the country is improved.
Speaking in Eldoret during the National Quaker secondary schools principals’ conference, Mr. Wekesa said they have realized the need of the church to continue to be given a role in the country’s education.
Wekesa said the church always has a critical role to play in any education system and they must appreciate the government for allowing them to be sponsors in several of the public schools
The conference that brought together over 200 head teachers from Friends (Quaker) secondary schools was aimed at giving a platform to discuss on how to improve on the education standards in the schools that they sponsor.
“We want to ensure we maintain the quality of education in our schools amid high demand from the public,” noted the Secretary to the Education Commission of the Friends secondary schools Violet Opala.
Ms. Opala who is the principal of Kaimosi Girls high school further expressed her support for the planed change of the education system saying the 8 4 4 system has been in place for over thirty years and its good for another system to be introduced.
She however called for the piloting of the new system to ensure it works before being fully rolled out across the country.
“We need to first work on the system so as to ascertain as to whether it is a viable curriculum that is likely to deliver on the interests of the country and ensure it fits in the system”, said Ms. Opala.
The Friends (Quakers) church has several high performing secondary schools that it sponsors mainly in Nairobi, Kisii, Nyamira, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties.
