Gor Mahia maintained top spot in the Kenyan Premier League standings after defeating Nzoia Sugar 1-0 at Mumias Sports Complex. Gor took the lead in the 15th minute when Meddie Kagere broke Nzoia’s defence before beating Mustapha Oduor with a scorching shot.
The goal did not deter the Bungoma side who piled on the pressure that yielded a penalty in the 34th minute when Shakava Haron fouled Omondi inside the box.
Edwin Wafula who stepped up to take the penalty watched in disbelief as his shot was saved by Gor Mahia goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch to see the 15-time league champions go to the break with a solitary goal. Nzoia who started the League season with a 5-2 drubbing of Tusker dominated the second half but lady luck and good goalkeeping by Oluoch was their undoing.
Gor coach Ze Maria said Nzoia is a good team and they had to fight for every ball to emerge narrow winners. “We maintained the same level for the entire 90 minute. Our target is to win the league and we shall maintain that fighting spirit to the end if victory has to come to us at the end of the season,” he said.
Nzoia coach Bernard Mwalala blamed the referee for the outcome insisting that his team was stronger than Gor Mahia and deserved a win.
