This years’ groove award was characterized by new faces unlike the previous years where the big and commons names in the gospel industry dominated the awards.
The gospel bigwigs like Bahati and Willy Paul Msafi not only missed to scoop an award in the just ended groove award ceremony, but were never nominated in any category for the awards.
The 11th year groove awards took place at the Safaricom Stadium indoor arena at Kasarani, Nairobi.
Among the new faces in the gospel industry is the ‘Mwema’ hit maker Mercy Masika who won the ‘skiza’ ring back tune of the year. Her song Nikupendeze topped the song of the year category.
The unexpected also happened when L-Jay, the Sigogo singer clinched one of the contested category, the male artist of the year beating the gospel bigwigs who also contested for the category like Daddy Owen, Eko Dydda, Guardian Angel, JFAM and The Lingala ya Yesu singer Pitson.
The album of the year went to Mery D Lai of the album Emmanuel while Kelele Takatifu group with their song Ngori won the group of the year award.
The missing of Barua singer Bahati and Willy Paul Msafi of the song take it slow ft Sauti Sol might have been as a result much controversy that ended up all over social media.
