The Principal of Kapsabet school for the deaf Mr. Alfred Tingiya has appealed to the government through the Ministry of Education to consider the needs of the deaf students in Kenyan schools by ensuring that books are set and written in the Kenya Sign Language communication.
Speaking during the launch of strategic plan for the school for the year 2016-2019, Tingiya said that students with hearing impairment should be examined in a special way and not be tested like the normal students.
He appealed to the Ministry to make arrangements for the special case by ensuring that their text books are set and written in Kenya sign language communication so as to make them understand better.

He said that their exams should also be set in Sign language as they are oriented to practical work.
“Our students should be subjected to tests using the language that they understand so as to enable them excel.” He added.
The launch of the strategic plan for the school aims at working on the infrastructure development, expansion of the school land and improvement in the academics of special needs pupils.
Kapsabet school for the deaf has three institutions namely the primary, secondary and vocational training under a five acre piece of land which is very congested thus needs a lot of land to accommodate the three institutions.
The school aims to achieve a mean score of 6.0 as is currently on a mean of 2.2.
The school is poorly staffed as it has three TSC teachers and fifty seven employed by BOG.
Tingiya urged the Ministry of Education to consider the school in recruitment as deaf children have equal rights just like the normal ones.
