Today, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Hon. Aden Duale, joined Bungoma Governor, Kenneth Lusaka, to launch a significant 620 million shilling Integrated Landscape Management project focused on conserving and restoring the Mt. Elgon ecosystem.
The event, held at the Kaberwa Primary School grounds in Kapsokwony, Mt. Elgon, marked a major step forward in efforts to protect and rejuvenate the Mt. Elgon Forest, a critical natural resource for both the environment and local communities.
A Game-Changer for Local Livelihoods
Governor Kenneth Lusaka, in his address during the launch, emphasized the potential transformative impact of the project on local communities. “Let this money transform the livelihoods of our people,” Lusaka said, highlighting the economic and social benefits the project will bring to the region. The initiative, which is part of the government’s broader environmental conservation efforts, is set to improve both the ecosystem and the quality of life for those who depend on the Mt. Elgon area for their livelihoods.
Expansion of Kaberwa Tree Nursery
A key component of the project is the expansion of the Kaberwa Tree Nursery, which will grow from 1 to 2 acres. The expansion will significantly increase its capacity to produce tree seedlings, from 500,000 annually to 1 million. These seedlings will play a pivotal role in the restoration of the Mt. Elgon Forest, contributing to efforts under the government’s ambitious 15 Billion National Tree Growing Programme.
The expanded nursery will also provide ample job opportunities for local residents in tree nursery operations, conservation, and related fields. This will, in turn, stimulate the local economy within the Mt. Elgon Forest Ecosystem Project area, creating both direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Environmental Impact
The Integrated Landscape Management project is expected to make a lasting positive impact on the Mt. Elgon ecosystem, which has faced significant degradation over the years. The restoration efforts will help conserve biodiversity, improve water catchment areas, and protect the livelihoods of communities that depend on the forest’s resources.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
As part of the broader initiative, the government is committed to achieving long-term environmental sustainability by promoting conservation practices and advancing eco-friendly economic activities. The project is also aligned with Kenya’s national tree planting goals, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to mitigating climate change and enhancing its natural heritage.
The partnership between the national government, county leadership, and local communities underscores the collaborative approach needed to tackle environmental challenges and build a sustainable future for the Mt. Elgon region.
The launch of the Integrated Landscape Management project marks a promising beginning to what is expected to be a transformative journey for the environment and the people of Mt. Elgon.
