The government has been urged to consider splitting Mixed Secondary Schools, to set up separate Boys and Girls Schools, to tame the problem of early pregnancies among students. Speaking to the press, Mrs Rachel Kombwa, who is the principal of Webuye DEB Secondary School, said school heads are experiencing challenges, with the moral behaviour of students having to be kept in check.
She said many Mixed Secondary Schools have been plagued by cases of teenage pregnancies, with culprits being boda boda riders, the rich and more affluent men who lure girls and in other cases, male students. She said the only solution for such schools is to have a separation and to ensure Boys and Girls go to the separate schools. She said most affected schools are located in towns, and they are day schools, “Our tasks are mostly limited to school and it’s hard to make follow ups after the students have left…I would even suggest that every school in town should be a boarding school,” she said. She urged parents to be more responsible and be vigilant and counsel their children while at home so that they can get the required direction in life.
