The government’s 100% transition of students to secondary schools has come under scrutiny, this time from Bungoma East KNUT Secretary Chrispinus Sifuna. Speaking to the press in Webuye, Sifuna said the idea is noble but the challenges it has posed to school managements are tough, including the accommodation of the increasing number of students due to lack of enough classrooms in many schools countrywide. He said after doing a survey in secondary schools in Bungoma North, it was noted the number of students in many schools is high compared to the number of teachers which is quite below the required standard.
He said it will make it harder for students to get sufficient education. He cautioned the government to be wary of rushing changes in the education sector without involving stakeholders, saying that the government is posting PR moves at the expense of the taxpayers.
However, he urged teachers to play their part by working hard even if the environment might not be conducive but promised that the teachers’ union will continue to fight for their rights.
