The government will set aside 10 acres of land at the Inland Container Depo in Naivasha Industrial Park to be used as a dry port by South Sudan. Speaking to the press at State House accompanied by South Sudan President Salva Kiir, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the move is set to ease the movement of goods consigned to South Sudan. Kenya and Uganda also arrived at the same agreement earlier this year, with President Kenyatta revealing that land will be set aside in Naivasha to develop Uganda’s dry port.
On Monday, President Kenyatta said Kenya is committed to providing any necessary capacity building support that may be required on mutually agreed terms including development and mentorship programmes for high-level cadre in South Sudan’s public service.
He further expressed commitment to the full implementation of the LAPSSET (Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport) project including a transnational highway, oil pipeline and Lamu port among others. He said on the Lamu port, the first berth will be ready by August this year, and the second and third berths are expected to be completed within 2020.
South Sudan President Salva Kiir, who is in Kenya for a two-day state visit, said the leaders have agreed on a framework for the engagement on border issues, “Technical teams from both countries will meet to start the process of resolving border-related issues,” he said.
