The government has been urged to respect and protect the media in their role as it is the only source of information to the masses worldwide.
This is according to the speaker for Nandi county assembly Hon Joshua Kiptoo who cited that media should be respected by all authorities and accorded amble time to perform its duties without any interference.
“The government should step up and ensure safety of journalists because without journalists no one will know what is happening around the world” Kiptoo said
He said that media is a noble profession with a lot of risks as many journalists have lost their lives while in the line of duty due to attacks and even physical harassments in their watchdog role.
The speaker was speaking to journalists in Nandi where he lauded their efforts in keeping the audience informed always i.e. going extra mile in unmasking the doings by the government and in the society at large thus should be accorded respect.
The speaker furthermore added that the media should be accorded respect in right to information, freedom of information and expression without being gagged as it is the duty of the media to inform, educate and watchdog.
