The national and county governments have been urged to invest in renovation and construction of dams as one of the measures that will help control floods being witnessed in various parts of the country.
Speaking when he visited floods victims in Likuyani ward, Phanicey Foundation Chief Executive Officer Mr. Bright Lidaga Kyadiva said it was regrettable that most dams constructed during the colonial period have been neglected and no longer serve the purpose.
He said some of the dams have never been renovated since independence and are full of all sorts of dirt and can’t store water as it was intended therefore leading to unnecessary floods that could be prevented.
More disappointing, Mr. Bright said some of the dams have been grabbed and converted into personal property.
He said it was high time the national and county governments thought of renovating all existing dams and even construct new ones to check on the flow of water to avert the floods.
During the event Bright donated an assortment of foodstuff and other basics to the victims who were displaced from their homes in Lupele village after Kipsangui stream broke its bank.
He also donated water can and soaps to help the victims who are Camping at PEFA and Joy Baptized churches regularly wash their hands as directed by the government to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.
He also advised them to adhere to other directives by the government while at the camp to ensure they don’t get infected with the killer virus.
