Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya was on Tuesday afternoon freed on a one million bond with an alternative cash bail of five hundred thousand after his arrest on Monday morning following corruption allegations leveled against him.
In his ruling at the Milimani anti-corruption law courts, Principal Magistrate Charles Ondieki however barred the Trans Nzoia County Chief from accessing his office for 60 days. He said this was to avoid the governor from interfering with the evidence and the witnesses.
The magistrate also ordered the governor not to travel outside the country, unless permitted by the court. Natembeya was also asked not to engage in the discussion of the case in public, a case that will attract arrest.
‘’Any breach of the conditions shall attract punishable consequences, including cancellation of bonds or bail,” the magistrate said.
On Monday morning, the officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission raided the governor’s Kitale and Nairobi homes with search warrants in relation to corruption allegations.
The charge sheet indicated that Natembeyea received Sh.1,127,900 from Mercy Chelangat, the director of lyama Agro Science Limited and the proprietor of Maria stores that had engaged in business with the County government of Trans Nzoia.
The second charge is related to receiving 2,124,668 from Emmanuel Wafula Masungo who is the beneficial owner of Easterly Winds Limited.
The governor pleaded not guilty to all the charges alleged against him.
