Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has lauded the recently assented Sugar Bill 2022, calling it a pivotal move towards empowering farmers and revitalizing Kenya’s ailing sugar industry.
Speaking at a Sunday service in Khwisero, Kakamega, alongside President William Ruto, Governor Lusaka expressed his optimism that the Bill will effectively address the longstanding challenges that have hindered growth in the sector.
“This Bill is a game-changer in the sugar sector,” Governor Lusaka remarked. “It will transform the ailing industry by enabling the re-establishment of the Kenya Sugar Board, the creation of the Kenya Sugar Research and Training Institute, and the implementation of the Sugar Development Levy.”
The Governor emphasized the importance of fully implementing the provisions of the Bill to ensure it reaches its full potential. According to Lusaka, the reforms outlined in the legislation will be crucial in reversing the challenges faced by the industry and promoting sustainable growth for sugarcane farmers.
Lusaka also took the opportunity to reaffirm the region’s unwavering commitment to the government’s approach of unity and collaboration. “We echo calls for unity and assure the Head of State of our unwavering support,” the Governor concluded.
