Governor Kenneth Lusaka has officially launched the distribution of over 500 livestock to small-scale farmers across Bungoma County. This initiative, aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector, is set to empower farmers and boost the region’s livestock production.
The distribution of livestock, which includes 236 young dairy heifers, 264 Alpine dairy goats, and Dopper sheep, is part of the County Empowerment Fund (CEF) initiative. The program is designed to support farmers with high-quality animals that will improve milk production, promote sustainable farming practices, and enhance household income.
Governor Lusaka led the distribution of 30 high-quality heifers to 25 farmer groups in Kabula Ward, Bumula, marking a significant milestone in his administration’s ongoing efforts to drive economic empowerment. In his address, the governor emphasized the pivotal role of community-driven empowerment programs in fostering long-term change.
“This occasion marks a significant milestone in our efforts to empower our farmers, strengthen our livestock sector to enhance production, improve livelihoods, and ensure food security for our county,” Governor Lusaka remarked. He highlighted that the initiative is not only a step towards enhancing agricultural productivity but also a vital means of alleviating poverty in Bungoma.
In addition to the livestock distribution, Governor Lusaka reiterated his commitment to supporting farmers through sustainable programs that include capacity building and access to veterinary services. He encouraged residents to embrace livestock farming, which he sees as an effective tool in economic growth and poverty reduction.
“Livestock farming plays a crucial role in improving livelihoods, and as a county government, we are committed to ensuring our farmers have the necessary tools and resources to succeed,” said Lusaka.
The program will be implemented across 17 wards in Bungoma County. To ensure the sustainability of the initiative, the distribution will follow a rotational model where farmers who receive heifers will pass them on to other farmers after they have calved, ensuring that the benefits of the initiative extend across the entire county.
Governor Lusaka’s vision for Bungoma County is clear: to create a thriving agricultural sector that benefits every resident. By investing in livestock farming, the county aims to foster economic growth, improve food security, and uplift the lives of thousands of farmers.
