Nandi Governor Stephen Sang has urged the national government to pay mining royalties and operationalize the Mining Law within the shortest possible time. Speaking during a meeting with the Cabinet Secretary for Mining John Munyes in his office, Sang said the government should operationalize the law that entails the benefits of mining, mainly royalties, so that the County government and local communities benefit.
The Governor said that since the launch of the Karebe Gold Mine in Chemase area in Nandi, which has been in operation for 10 years, they have not received any single coin in terms of royalties from the company and its valuable resources.
On the other hand Mining CS John Munyes said the government is in process of conducting surveys to ascertain the availability of gold in areas like Tinderet and Aldai. Karebe gold mine is among the largest in Kenya.
