Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been released on a Kshs 15 million cash bail in the Kshs 588 million tender case. The Governor has also been barred from accessing his offices, in a move that highlights the changing script in the war against corruption. According to magistrate Lawrence Mugambi, barring the County boss from the office will ensure the integrity of the trial and public interest. The Kiambu Deputy Governor Dr. James Nyoro will now take over the mantle for the duration of the trial.
Waititu, together with his wife Susan Wangari and eight other suspects denied the corruption charges levelled against them when they appeared at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday. Susan Wangari was released on a cash bail of Kshs 4 million. The arrest of the suspects came after a recommendation by the Director of Public Prosecutions, who noted that the tender of Kshs 588 for the upgrading of roads was awarded to M/s Testimony Enterprises, which is closely linked to Governor Waititu. Part payments have already been made to teh company in tender and contracts form, and teh moeny channelled elsewhere.
