Political supremacy took center stage during the burial ceremony of the late Beatrice Chepkurui, a former principal of Kibuk girls at Kaptama village as Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula and Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati each took credit for the equalization funds being brought to Mt. Elgon constituency.
Senator Wetangula said through his role in the Senate he made sure the constituency was allocated money in the fund saying it has lagged behind in development. He called upon leaders to ensure proper utilisation of the fund saying residents at the grassroot level need to enjoy good services same to other people in developed areas. However, Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati took a stab at the sentiments saying immediately after being elected he invited the commission of revenue allocation chair to the County and together, they visited Mt. Elgon constituency to ascertain the situation. He added that eleven locations are set to benefit from the fund saying no one should take credit for having been involved in the process of availing the funds without knowing the whole back story.
However, the two agreed that the Senate needs to hasten its resolution on the revenue allocation stalemate to enable Counties to access funds as soon as possible and avert a possible shut down. Senator Wetangula being a co-chair of the committee that was formed in the Senate to find a consensus on the matter said they will be meeting on Monday to try and unlock the stalemate. Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka said he is optimistic that the stalemate will be solved.
Mourners eulogised the late Beatrice, remembering her as a great disciplinarian who was a role model in the society. One of her students, Dr. Margaret Makelo, the wife of Senate speaker Ken Lusaka, said she was a wonderful teacher who made sure her students excelled.
