Governors have been asked to obey summons by the senate to explain how the money allocated to counties has been used in the last financial year.
Vihiga senator George Khaniri said the senate as an oversight authority, had asked the governors to appear before it to explain the expenditure of devolved funds.
“The senate has no ill motives in ordering the governors to appear before it. This process is about transparency and accountability of the devolved funds,” said Khaniri.

He said that most of the counties had borrowed a lot of money and without scrutiny, they may lose the funds through corruption, thus there is a need for accountability.

He stated that Vihiga County had been allocated about ksh10 billion in the last three financial years but there isn’t much to show for it in terms of development in the county.
Khaniri pointed out that the county governments should stop embezzling funds meant for development but instead focus on uplifting the living standard of its electorate.
He also called on the county government to increase its revenue base to sustain development plans that they had initiated in various wards.
At the same time, he criticized the government of doing little to fight poverty among Kenyans adding that poverty has impoverished Kenyans.
He said that the government has destroyed the country’s economy and most elected leaders are in a looting spree while the common man is left to suffer.
He added that as western leaders, they will team up with other like minded leaders from other regions to ensure they win 2017 elections.
“We must get our share in the next government and leaders should sacrifice their political ambitions to support one person to vie for the top seat,” said Khaniri.
