Madaraka Day celebrations that were held at Kidundu stadium in Vihiga County were marred with heavy rainfall resulting in low attendance.
The function experienced tens of attendees with majority drawn from the local administration officials.
The function was led by Vihiga County Commissioner Susan Waweru.
Most of the residents said they opted to stay at home and follow the national celebration on televisions as the weather was rainy and chilly almost the entire day.
“Even if we had to attend it would be impossible as it was rainy and also most of us don’t see anything to celebrate since independence,” said Kevin Chadiva a resident of Majengo area in Vihiga.
Waweru who addressed few residents who turned up for the function urged them to maintain peace during this election period.
“Let us keep our society peaceful and respect each other during elections, the process will come and go and as Kenyans we will remain to live together,” said Waweru.
The calls for peaceful elections came amid the political class from the County snubbing the function.
This was the first Madaraka day celebrations held at the County levels since the inception of Corona Virus in 2020.
