Bungoma Woman Representative Hon. Catherine Wambilianga, has issued a powerful call to action for parents to take a more active role in addressing the increasing cases of teenage pregnancies in the region.
Speaking at Friends Church, Wambilianga emphasized the crucial role that parents play in safeguarding their children’s futures, especially girls, from harmful influences and those who prey on them.
The MP, deeply concerned about the surge in teenage pregnancies, shared the devastating impact this issue is having on the education system. She revealed that much of the bursary funds allocated for supporting students’ education have been redirected to assist young girls who have dropped out of school due to pregnancies.
“It is heartbreaking that many girls are forced to leave school because of pregnancies that could have been prevented,” Wambilianga remarked. “The resources that were meant to further their education are now being used to help them cope with the repercussions of early pregnancies.”
This growing challenge, according to the MP, underscores the need for heightened awareness and vigilance within the community. Parents must ensure that their children, especially their daughters, are protected and shielded from circumstances that might derail their education and futures.
While calling attention to the plight of teenage girls, Wambilianga also stressed the importance of addressing the needs of boys, whose challenges are sometimes neglected. She emphasized that a balanced approach to youth development, focusing on both boys and girls, is essential for building a healthier, more equitable future for all.
Beyond her remarks on education, Wambilianga pledged her commitment to supporting local women vendors in Bungoma. As part of her ongoing efforts to improve the livelihoods of local women, the MP promised to provide at least two tents in each ward and water tanks to improve access to water for vendors.
