Over 14,000 integrated internally displaced persons from across Nandi County have held protests over their delayed compensation from the national government. The IDPs from different IDP camps including Kosabei, Serengonik, Kapkangani, Ng’atipkong among others protested along Namgoi-Kapsabet road while chanting the slogan ‘Haki Yetu’, leading to an interruption in transport activities.
They wanted to enter the Nandi County headquarters but were blocked by the security team, leading them to select a few representatives to go and set out their issues with the officials while the others waited outside, although the representative didn’t find the commissioner in his office.
Speaking to the press, the secretary of the integrated internal displaced persons in Nandi Mr Samuel Nyangari said the total number of integrated IDPs in Nandi, including the forest evictees, is 14,250, and they haven’t received the compensation of Kshs 400,000 since the program began.
Nyangari said it is now around ten years and the government has ignored them, and he said they need compensation too like other IDPs in other regions.
He said the government’s failure to compensate the IDPs has made them reluctant to vote come the general election, adding that over 14,000 votes will be lost unless their compensation is catered for.
