IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has said the Commission is on the homestretch as far as delivering the results is concerned. “We want to assure you that we’ve done our best as IEBC to ensure that the election is free for every voter, fair to every candidate and credible all stakeholder and most importantly the Kenyan people,” he said.
While giving the ninth IEBC press update at the Bomas of Kenya, Chebukati noted that the wait for results will be over soon, “We are working hard to ensure we get the final results as soon as possible. We expect that all presidential results from returning officers will reach the national tallying centre by 12 pm tomorrow, on 11th August.”
He commended Kenyans for the patience they’ve shown so far as IEBC finalizes the tallying process, adding that all leaders and parties should show restraint, “We urge leaders to avoid making statements that may cause tension among Kenyans,” he said.
The IEBC Chair said that many Kenyans have decided to download Form 34As from the electoral body’s website, “More than 300,000 people have downloaded results from the website since we started uploading yesterday,” he said.
The Form 34A is the first form used to tabulate the presidential results, where the presiding officer fills at the respective polling station and contains various details including the number of registered voters and votes garnered by the candidates. They are then handed over to the Constituency returning officer who fills the details in Form 34B. The Form 34Bs are then handed over to the presidential election returning officer who is IEBC Chairman by the constituency returning officers.
Chebukati said they’ve so far received 29,499 Form 34As and have uploaded to the public portal, adding that 1,032 out of the 40,883 polling stations are yet to report their results, “Officials are working round the clock to get details from various stations.”
He said that Form 34Bs are still being received, “As at 2 pm this afternoon, we have received 117 Form 34Bs out of the expected 290.” Furthermore, Chebukati welcomed observations from various mission groups including EU, COMESA, and AU, which have shown that the elections were free, fair and transparent.
