The process of selecting new leaders for Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) continues to unfold with great anticipation, as the selection panel presses on with interviews for both the position of Chairperson and six Commissioners.
Today, Tuesday, marked the continuation of interviews for the coveted Chairperson role. Among those interviewed was Eratus Edung, who, along with others like Francis Kakai Kissinger, Jacob Ngwele, and Joy-Brenda Masinde Mdivo, presented their qualifications and defended their suitability for overseeing the commission responsible for the country’s elections and boundary management.
The selection panel is not just looking for a Chairperson, however. Tomorrow, Wednesday, the process will shift focus to interviewing Lilian Wanjiku, Robert Akumu, and Saul Simiyu Wasilwa, who will complete the list of eleven candidates vying for the position of IEBC Chairperson.
On Monday, the panel had interviewed prominent figures such as Abdulqadir Lorot, former Chairperson of the Constitution Implementation Commission (CIC), Charles Nyachae, former Registrar of the Judiciary, Ann Amadi, and lawyer Edward Katama Ngeywa. Their diverse backgrounds and expertise have made for compelling discussions on the future direction of the IEBC.
The Selection Panel, led by Dr. Nelson Makanda, has an ambitious task ahead. In addition to selecting the next Chairperson, the panel will be tasked with appointing six Commissioners to oversee IEBC’s crucial electoral and boundary duties.
