Hundreds of political aspirants flocked to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties in Westlands, Nairobi, ahead of the IEBC deadline tomorrow to register as independent candidates and be cleared to vie for various seats in the general elections.
Some of the political aspirants have decided to vie as independent candidates after they lost to their opponents during the recent party primaries. Speaking at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties in Westlands, aspirant Mr Jackson Meso said that the Jubilee nominations turned out to be unfair and lacked credibility. He announced his intention to vie for Dagoretti North MP seat as an independent candidate after he lost to his opponent in the just concluded party nomination exercise.
Meso further said that he has totally lost confidence in the Jubilee party and therefore wants to stand independently and fight for the rights of the people of Dagoretti North. He urged the people of Dagoretti North to come out in large numbers and cast their votes freely in the upcoming general elections. The IEBC issued a notice to all independent candidates to submit their application forms by the 4 May 2017 which will allow them to contest for political offices and provide ample time for processing of their details.
Over 1,000 aspirants have submitted their documents to the electoral body to run as independent candidates after losing in the party primaries. The electoral body further indicated that the aspirant must obtain clearance from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties that requires the independent candidate not to be a member of any political party at least three months before the general election.
