The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Tuesday declared Jubilee’s Aaron Kipkirui Cheruiyot the winner in the Kericho senatorial elections cast Monday 9th March 2016 with 109,358 votes which was 65.2% of the total votes cast.
IEBC Chief Ececutive Officer Ezra Chiloba presented the certificate to Cheruiyot at the Kericho Tea Boys Secondary school tallying center.
Jubilee’s Kindiki Kithure and Kipchumba Murkomen flanked Cheruiyot as he received his victory certificate, amid cheers and jubilation from his supporters.
Also present to celebrate the win were former road minister Frankline Bett and energy minister Charles Keter. The Nakuru senator Lisa Chelule also joined Aaron Cheruiyot for celebrations.
Security was beefed up ahead of a celebration for the victory that ensued after the insurance of the certificate. A celebration that caused a traffic snarl-up in Kericho.
In his acceptance speech, Cheruiyot thanked the people of Kericho for believing in him and promised to work towards the benefit of the county.
His closest competitor, Kanu’s Kpkorir Marisin Sang managed to get 56,307 votes which was 35.55% of the total votes cast.
The other contestants were the National Vision Party’s Daniel Kipkorir Tanui who came a far third with 722 votes managing 0.5% of the entire votes, Maendeleo Democratic Party’s Wycliffe Kipkemoi Ngenoh 497 3% of the entire votes, United Democratic Movement’s Paul Kipyegon Sigei 473 also 3% of the entire votes and New Democrats David Kipkoech Mutai coming last with 427 votes.
