The Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) achieved 42% of its target in Lugari Sub County during the just concluded massive voter registration exercise.
Speaking to West media in his office, Lugari Sub County Elections Coordinator, Mr. Amos Nyongesa disclosed that a total of 6,891 persons registered as new voters in the sub county against the projected 16,417, which according to the coordinator translated to about 42%.
According to statistics in his office, Lugari ward led with 1,482 newly registered voters and was followed by Lumakanda and Lwandeti with 1217 and 1176 voters respectively.
Mautuma and Chevaywa wards recorded 1,149 and 1,005 new voters respectively.
“Chekalini ward trailed after managing to register 802 new voters,” revealed Nyongesa who cited lack of enough funds and voter education as among key challenges that contributed to failure by the body to realize her set targets.
The sub county elections boss has, however, encouraged unregistered residents to continue visiting IEBC’s office at Lumakanda where they can register as voters.
“Let residents understand that what has just been concluded was the one month nationwide massive voter registration exercise. Otherwise, IEBC will continue to routinely register voters until May next year” stated Nyongesa.
