The high court has ordered IEBC to further extend the mass voter registration exercise for three more days, extending the exercise until Sunday 19th February, 6 PM. This is after a petition filed by activist Okiya Omtatah. The court had previously extended the exercise by two days after the deadline day target on February 14th.
With the general election date set, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said that the initial extension had surprised them, “We had our timelines. We had set the mass voter registration to end on 14th February,” said IEBC Chair Chebukati, after the first extension. The number of registered voters is bound to increase, though, with leaders pushing for more Kenyans to register.
Voter apathy has been the main challenge, and even after encouragement from various leaders for Kenyans to register, the voter registration tally still remains low in various regions countrywide.
