Members of Parliament (MPs) are set to present an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua today, Tuesday, at 2:30 PM. This move follows a wave of public outcry and allegations against Gachagua, with Majority Leader and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah confirming that the motion will be tabled before the National Assembly.
To proceed, the motion requires the support of 233 MPs, and reports indicate that 302 members have already signed in favor.
Gachagua’s accusers argue that he has violated Article 10 of the Constitution, claiming his public statements have been inciteful, reckless, and inflammatory, stirring ethnic tensions among the populace. Furthermore, he faces additional accusations of breaching Articles 147, 148, 174, 186, and 189, which pertain to his conduct and responsibilities as the principal assistant to the President.
In addition to these allegations, Gachagua must defend himself against claims of unlawfully and corruptly acquiring assets using taxpayers’ money, with properties reportedly spread across Nyeri, Nairobi, and Kilifi counties.
This development comes after the High Court declined to issue interim orders in a second attempt by civil society organizations to halt the impeachment process, setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown.
