Independent candidates in Trans Nzoia County have struck a deal to work together to ensure they scoop many seats in the County. Robert Wanjala Makona, who is an independent candidate vying for the Saboti parliamentary seat, said they’ve formed a formidable alliance to work in solidarity with every independent candidate.
The leaders condemned the nomination process done in different parties, which contributed to their decision to be independent candidates in order to retain their seats.
“We had no option but to contest as independent candidates because the nomination exercises which were done in several parties were shambolic and not transparent as several parties favoured some candidates,” said Makona.
He said the stratagems they’ve put in place include organising for Harambees to get campaigning money, holding grassroots campaigns together to support each other as well as supporting weak candidates.
They argued it was time for residents to elect leaders based on their integrity track record and not according to party affiliations as several leaders who won because of their respective party’s popularity have failed residents before.
They appealed to party leaders to stop criticizing them in public but instead work with them at the grassroots level if they want to be elected, promising to rally their supporters to vote out leaders who have demeaned them.
His sentiments were echoed by Tuwani Ward MCA aspirant Lydia Likhali who decried the manner nominations were held in Jubilee party and urged Tuwani residents to vote for leaders based on their development records.
