The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into a fatal shooting incident that led to several people being injured and at least two dead in Kolongolo village, Kwanza constituency, Trans Nzoia County. The incident happened on Sunday evening after police officers were sent to arrest a domestic violence suspect, tension arose as villagers tried to come to the rescue of the suspect, who, according to an eyewitness, was being roughed up by the officers, and that the officers opened fire when residents intervened. Trans Nzoia County Assembly Speaker Joshua Werunga was also injured as he rushed to the scene to calm the situation. The victims were rushed to Mt Elgon hospital and leaders have condoled with the families.
IPOA said, as a result, investigations commenced on Monday to get to the bottom of the matter, “the Independent Policing Oversight Authority has this morning launched independent investigations into the incident with a view of unravelling the circumstances that led to the fatal shootings, injuries and more particularly whether the police officers were justified in the use of their firearms,” read the statement from Mrs Anne Makori, IPOA Chairperson. She said if culpability is found after investigations, those responsible will face the full force of the law through appropriate criminal and disciplinary recommendations to the DPP.
