The Kenyan volleyball queen Janet Wanja is dead. The volleyball legend succumbed to gallbladder cancer while undergoing treatment in Nairobi Hospital.
The tragic loss has left the nation mourning one of its most celebrated sports icons.
Wanja was widely admired for her dedication, discipline, and contributions to volleyball and football, inspiring generations of young athletes.
Several leaders across the country led by President William Ruto have sent their message of condolences to the family volleyball icon.
President William Ruto said, “Janet Wanja, a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, served the cause of our country’s sports with honour and dedication.
She was focused, hardworking and a team player.
May it be comfort to her family, friends and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time.
One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja.
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Interior Raymond Omollo said: “We join Kenyans and the sporting family in mourning the untimely demise of Janet Wanja, a volleyball icon who inspired countless young athletes with her unmatched talent and determination. Her loss is not just a blow to her family and friends but to the entire nation.”
FKF President Hussein Mohammed also shared a heartfelt tribute: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the legendary Janet Wanja, a former volleyball star who has left us after battling cancer. Your legacy will forever be cherished.”
