Jimi Wanjigi has been locked out of the presidential race after failing on two grounds as is required by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission – IEBC, guidelines.
Wanjigi who was seeking approval to run on the Safina party was turned back by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati who said upon perusal of Wanjigi’s submitted documents it was realized that he only had attached transcripts and not a degree certificate as required by law.
Chebukati also pointed out that the Safina party Presidential hopeful failed to submit signatures and ID copies from the required 24 Counties saying there were mismatches from the 23 counties he submitted.
In what turned out to be a dramatic scene at the Bomas, Wanjigi cried foul insisting that the Commission chair Mr. Chebukati was inconsistent as he had approved another candidate who had similar circumstances as his, accusing the IEBC of unfair treatment.
Mr. Wanjigi’s running mate lawyer Willis Otieno stood his ground arguing that transcripts were evidence enough that the candidate had in fact completed studies and was only awaiting graduation, urging the IEBC to clear them.
Exchange of words between Wanjigi and the Commission chair Mr. Chebukati saw Wanjigi’s microphone switched off, with Chebukati directing him to address supporters outside the clearing hall at the Bomas.
It remains to see if Wanjigi will take the matter to the disputes resolution committee or will opt out of the 9th August Presidential race
