United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Cyrus Jirongo has lauded the talks engineered towards establishing peace and unity by President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga, “Last Friday we saw a different mindset emerge that deserves the support of all Kenyans who mean well for our country and our people,” he said, referring to a change of direction after a period where leaders have placed their self interests ahead of the nation’s good.
Addressing the press in Nairobi, Jirongo said that the decision made by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga to unite is an act of good faith to heal Kenya and unite Kenyans. “The decision by his Excellency the President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga to put aside their differences, meet as leaders, and decide to work together to heal and unite Kenya is definitely a masterstroke. It is the stuff of history, nationalism, patriotism and leadership rolled up in one action,” he said.
Jirongo said that the two leaders need support, not condemnation. He urged other leaders in Kenya to stop sulking and complaining as it adds no value to the people of Kenya. “This is not the time to tell us that you were not consulted. This is not the time to tell us about this or that coalition or this or that leader or party. This is the time for each leader to show what he or she has to offer,” he said, “We cannot continue having leaders whose only contribution is seeking to be consulted or invited,” he added.
He also said that Kenya needs leaders who can take initiative, provide leadership and invite others to share the ideas. “Kenya needs leadership not egos and lamentations,” he said. He urged those seeking leadership in 2022 to separate their ambitions from this initiative.
