Jua Kali traders and small entrepreneurs at Kiminini market have called on the County government of Trans Nzoia to collect and remove piles of litter that are scattered everywhere around the market. They lamented that the rubbish has been one of the major factors that has contributed to poor markets in their businesses hence low income received.
Addressing journalists, they called on the County government of Trans Nzoia and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to intervene and sanitize the surroundings of Kiminini market by collecting the garbage from the areas around Jua Kali industries.
“Look at the pieces of paper, broken bottles and the smell around here; this has been a thorn in the flesh of our work as Jua Kali artisans. It has been scaring away our customers and in most occasions we sell nothing.” They lamented.
They further pleaded with the County government and other business agencies to come up and support them with business grants which will enable them to produce their jiko (s) and other items on large scale hence enhancing better profits and good taxes on the side of the government.
They also reminded the Ministry of Health at the County level to intervene and help them since most them are suffering from communicable diseases such as typhoid and malaria which they claimed that the cause is generated by flies and mosquitoes originating from various dumpsites along the corridors of Kiminini market.
