The Kakamega Airstrip is set to receive a facelift, after the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) kicked off its rehabilitation and expansion at a cost of Kshs 174.7 million. Western Airports Regional Manager Selina Gor, projects the rehabilitation to take not more than 15 months although there are chances of it being finished early.
She was speaking at the airstrip when she conducted a tour at the facility. Gor pointed out that she expects the completion of the airstrip to ease the congestion currently being witnessed at the Kisumu International Airport, citing passengers from neighbouring Counties will have the option of using the airstrip.
She indicated that the project funds were contributed jointly by the World Bank and the government under the Aviation Development Fund. “We want to fast-track a total overhaul of the airstrip apron, runaway, taxi parking bay and the fence which must be fixed in 15 months or even less,” she said.
