Kakamega County deputy governor Philip Kutima has refuted claims that the County government of Kakamega has received a lot of donations meant to cater for Covid-19 preparedness that cannot be accounted for.
Earlier, the boda boda fraternity in the County had displayed their displeasure due to not receiving donations meant to help them through the Coronavirus pandemic from the Kenya Chambers of Commerce Kakamega Chapter with worries that the County government is not open with the handling of the donation.
But speaking to the press after receiving forty 500 litre water tanks from One Acre Fund organization the deputy governor Prof. Philip Kutima rubbished the claims saying the entire County of Kakamega has received donations from only 8 entities.
Kutima in his speech failed to understand how a big County like Kakamega could attract only a few donors yet the business community in Kakamega is fairly rich. “It is unfortunate that many people think we have received lots of donations from well-wishers but I can assure you it’s only a few people who have turned up to ensure we receive something during this period and next time I will provide the breakdown of what we have received” said Kutima.
The deputy governor’s statement comes barely weeks after sentiments from Governor Wycliffe Oparanya that most of the donors will only appear for public relations purposes, seeking cheap publicity by taking photos with sample donations promising to deliver the full package only to disappear after the photo sessions.
