Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has been elected as the new Council of Governors chairman, taking over from Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok. Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria is the new vice chairperson, replacing Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru. The Kakamega Governor saw off competition from the former vice chair Ann Waiguru, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o, Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya and Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago. The ODM party has lauded Oparanya’s election, saying that his track record speaks for itself, and his election confirms the confidence his colleagues in the CoG have in him, “It is our hope that Hon. Oparanya will use the position to champion for the strengthening of Devolution for a better future of our Nation,” read part of the statement. Makueni’s Kivutha Kibwana was elected as the Council’s chief whip.
