A solitary goal in the 54th minute by the in-form Esau Meja was enough to see a dominant Kakamega County men’s soccer team, coached by veteran tacticians Fred Serenge and Mr. Edward Odera, sail through to the semi-finals of the ongoing Kenya Intercounty Sports Association (KYISA) games at Kapsabet High school, Nandi County.
Meja, one of the tournament’s Most Valuable Player so far, crowned his performance against Uasin Gishu as the toast of the Kakamega side with a well-taken volley after being fed on a nicely curled cross by second-half substitute Mike Wafula. To qualify for the quarter-finals, Kakamega shook off strong opposition from Nakuru, Busia, Makueni and hosts Nandi counties to top the pool. Uasin Gishu, on the other hand, emerged first runners-up in the pool that was topped by little known Kirinyaga County which bundled out defending champions Kwale County from the Coastal region.
In Men’s volleyball, Kakamega County laboured to defeat industrious Turkana County by 5 sets to 4 to set up a quarterfinal contest tomorrow (Friday) against TransNzoia county. Kirinyaga, Garissa and hosts Nandi counties are also favourites in that category.
