The Kapenguria Water and Sewerage Company is among the worst performing water companies in the country according to the report on water status in the country. This has been revealed by the Water Services Regulatory Board Chairman Mr. Joshua Irungu who raised concerns over the companies poor performance based on key performance indicators like water quality, affordability and availability water and issues of governance.
The Chairman pointed out that poor performances have damaged consumers’ trust in water companies because the companies do not provide quality water as required by law among other essential services.
Speaking while meeting water stakeholders in Kapenguria, he said that there are also gaps in governance by board of directors and lack of technical skills. “We need to identify and fill the gaps to support water companies on billing and have performance improvement plans that will guide us to take the water utility to a higher level….Sanitation and water provision is the mandate of the County governments but regulation is the role of the national government, that is why we’re working closely with devolved units to make sure water services are improved,” Irungu said.
He said that they came up with water utility turnaround strategy and County Government Engagement Strategy to make sure by 2022, 80% of Kenyans should have access to clean water.
Kapenguria Water and Sewerage Company Ambassador Steven Loyatum said there is need to improve water supply, quality and management of water services in the County.
