Business community at Kapkateny Market in Mt. Elgon constituency are up in arms detesting a poor working environment they have been forced to undergo despite paying taxes to the County government of Bungoma.
Earlier on Friday they closed their businesses and engaged in a peaceful demonstration to push for recognition from the County government.
Led by their chairman David Wabomba, they claimed that Kapkateny market has never been allocated funds for an upgrade despite being one of the leading markets in tax remittance saying it is unfortunate.
Mr. Wabomba asked the area MCA Joan Kirong to be proactive and represent their sentiments to the County government. He added that the Governor had promised to help out during the campaign period, something they hope the Governor will fulfill.
His sentiments were echoed by other traders who said other markets such as Kipsigon and Kaptama have been upgraded despite coming in place after Kapkateny market. They have vowed not to remit
having been started way later than theirs saying they will not remit any tax to the government until their demands are met
The traders, especially women, regretted that the market has no public toilet, a situation they lament has forced them to use uncouth means to relieve themselves with much embarrassment.
They further disclosed that the drainage system at the market has blocked and the case is hazardous most especially during this rainy season.
The irate traders therefore have called upon the Bungoma governor Ken Lusaka to tour the market and provide a long lasting solution to them.
