Briefing West Media after the first day of the examination, Sub County Education Officer, Mr. Francis Shikanda said the exercise started on time as scheduled by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
“The well-guarded container was opened at exactly 4.30 am and by 6.45am all centre managers, who are respective head teachers, had picked day one exam papers,” said Shikanda, noting the container was opened and him acting Deputy County Commissioner, Mr. Reuben Kimosop.
Shikanda confirmed candidates started both morning and afternoon papers on time in all the centres.
He, however, noted about two candidates were absent and failed to sit for the first papers, Mathematics and English.
“We are yet to establish reasons behind the two candidates’ failure to appear for the examination,” said Shikanda.
The Sub County registered a total of 3,629 candidates for this year’s KCPE examination.
“A total of 1,873 girls registered for the exam against 1,756 boys,” he
clarified.
The official revealed the exercise was being carried out in 69 centres, out of which 45 are public schools, 23 private schools and one centre for adult learners.
He expressed his satisfaction over the number of security officers deployed to man the three-day exercise that ends on Thursday.
“At least two security officers are in charge of one centre,” he noted.
