Kenyans woke up Monday morning to the shocking news of the passing on of Kelvin Kiptum, the World Marathon record holder.
Kipptum died in a road accident alongside his Rwandese coach Garvais Hakizimana at Kaptagat on the Elgeyo Marakwet – Ravine road. The deceased were with Sharon Kosgei in the car who survived and was rushed to the hospital.
Police so far have reported that the tragic road crash occurred at around 11pm at Kaptagat area along Elgeyo Marakwet-Ravine road where Kiptum and Hakizimana died on the spot due to the impact of the self-involved accident.
Kiptum gained prominence in the world of athletics after registering the fastest marathon debut in Valencia in 2022.
After his triumph in the world marathon, the world-celebrated Olympian Eliud Kipchoge said “I was happy to see the record being broken,” Kipchoge longed to compete with Kelvin Kiptum, who smashed his record in 2023.
The duo legends were set to face each other in April and probably break the previous records.
Kelvin Kiptum has been mourned by many leaders across the country including the head of state President William Ruto who wrote, “Kelvin Kiptum was a star. Arguably one of the world’s finest sportsmen who broke barriers to secure a marathon record.
He was only 24 yet, as a hero, triumphed in Valencia, Chicago, and London and in other top competitions. His mental strength and discipline were unmatched. Kiptum was our future.
An extraordinary sportsman has left an extraordinary mark in the globe. Our thoughts are with the family and the sporting fraternity. Rest in Peace.
