Kenya on Tuesday July, 12 2022 commemorated the 6th edition of Africa Anti Corruption day that was held at Strathmore University.
This day brought together stakeholders, international partners and members of the public to raise public awareness on the evils of corruption and foster public support in the fight against graft.
This year, the commemoration was held under the theme, “Elect leaders of integrity to enhance transparency, integrity and accountability. It was a very critical and timely theme since the country was heading to the polls in a month’s time.
Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission chairperson Retired Archbishop Dr. Eliud Wabukala decried corruption as a hindrance to economic growth and social well being of Africa.
He also advised Kenyans to elect leaders with integrity since generations are entrusted in such leadership. This would help in curbing inefficiency and mismanagement of public funds.
Furthermore, Wabukala noted that accountability, good governance and effective service delivery comes as a result of electing leaders with high levels of integrity.
Anglican Church of Kenya Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit was the chief speaker during the function. He noted that the day was very important in reflecting the progress the country had made in tackling graft cases and examining measures put in place to fight the menace in Africa.
He advised Kenyans to embrace leadership that upholds the rule of law, integrity and moral uprightness.
“Kenyans should elect good leaders who inspire generations and disseminate hope,” Ole Sapit added.
He also decried the norm of idolizing and celebrating corrupt leaders and urged Kenyans to shun away from such individuals.
Panel discussion and plenary sessions were later held where stakeholders in the media sector, education sector and anti graft body discussed corruption, integrity and good governance.The panel discussion were moderated by renown scholar Prof Macharia Munene.
The media was feted as a key tool in fighting graft since it served the role of unearthing corruption scandals in the country. The role of EACC in fighting graft was also emphasized during the event.
Ultimately Kenyans were urged to treat the fight against graft as a collective responsibility.
