President William Ruto has pledged sh 2 million in humanitarian aid to support the Sudanese, whose lives have been severely impacted by ongoing conflict and instability. The announcement was made during the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the People of Sudan in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event was attended by key figures, including Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, as global leaders convened to address the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan.
Ruto’s commitment is aimed at providing essential aid to over 30 million Sudanese who are currently in desperate need of assistance. Speaking at the conference, President Ruto emphasized the importance of peace and dialogue, urging the warring parties in Sudan to prioritize negotiations over military action. He stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved through understanding, mutual respect, and cooperation, rather than through continued violence that only deepens suffering and destabilizes the region.
“Kenya stands with the people of Sudan during this challenging time,” said Ruto. “We believe that peace is the only way forward, and we call on all sides to shun divisive politics and embrace dialogue. The people of Sudan deserve peace, security, and a brighter future.”
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan has left thousands dead, millions displaced, and many others without access to basic necessities, as aid has been blocked by ongoing fighting. Ruto called for increased efforts to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches those who need it most, emphasizing the need for solidarity and cooperation among nations to address the suffering of the Sudanese people.
In addition to his support for Sudan, President Ruto held talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed at the National Palace in Addis Ababa. The two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral ties and deepening cooperation between Kenya and Ethiopia. Ruto expressed Kenya’s appreciation for Ethiopia’s leadership in regional peace and stability, particularly in the Horn of Africa, and reiterated the importance of maintaining strong diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.
On the topic of Somalia, President Ruto highlighted Kenya’s continued commitment to working alongside Ethiopia and other regional stakeholders in the search for lasting peace and security solutions. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and the advancement of peace efforts in the Horn of Africa.
