The Kenyan government has been urged to consider investing in early warning systems of curbing floods by conducting regular risk assessments in floods/mudslides prone areas in order to reduce the dangers of this disaster.
National Environmental Complaints Committee Secretary (NECC) Mr. John Chumo while addressing journalists in Nandi, said the Kenyan government should learn from the past disasters that have happened e.g. the Elnino rain which left many people homeless, by taking early warnings to avoid more wreckage and loss of lives.
He added that the Forty Seven counties should thoroughly invest in the early warning systems and warn people against human activities increasing cases of destructive floods like deforestation and cultivation along river banks.
His call comes amid warnings by the Kenya Meteorological department of possible heavy down pours in various parts of the country therefore Kenyans should be on a high alert.
Chumo appealed to these county governments to consider working with the locals in ensuring preventive measures are put in place to get rid of disasters through public sensitization.
“The public should be sensitized on the importance of tree planting to save the environment and curb such disasters for their safety” He added.
He revealed that those in landslides/flood prone areas like some parts of Tindiret, Aldai and Emgwen should be moved to safer places and tree planting exercise be conducted in the region to mitigate the disaster.
