Khalaba Ward in Bungoma County is set to experience significant improvements in water access, thanks to the efforts of area MCA Cornelius Makhanu. In a bid to address the ongoing water scarcity that has burdened local residents, Makhanu has initiated the reconstruction of four major springs: Sikulu, Nabukhamba, Mabele, and Kiberenge. The springs, once revitalized, will provide reliable and clean water to the community, easing the challenges that residents have faced for years.
Through his manager, Tom Wafula, MCA Makhanu emphasized the importance of clean water for the well-being of the residents. The spring reconstruction project is expected to go a long way in ensuring that the community has access to water year-round, regardless of seasonal changes.
The project will also create local employment opportunities, with Makhanu urging the contractor to hire youths from the area for the execution of the works.
The Ward Development Officer, Job Simiyu, revealed that 1.1 million shillings has been allocated to fund the spring reconstruction. “From our office, we will ensure that the funds are effectively utilized for the benefit of the residents. This project will improve access to water and contribute to the future development of our ward,” Simiyu explained.
As Bungoma County sets its sights on becoming a city, projects like this are integral in ensuring that residents are well-equipped to sustain themselves and thrive. The project is also part of a broader effort to enhance local infrastructure, with clean water being a critical part of the county’s long-term development.
Calvin Agade, the project contractor, assured residents that the project would be completed within two weeks, with work already underway. “We are committed to working closely with the community to ensure the successful completion of this project. Once complete, residents will no longer face the long waits and difficulty in filling their containers,” Agade said.
Caroline Nasimiyu, a representative from the Ministry of Water, confirmed that they will be on the ground to ensure the project meets all construction requirements and standards.
The residents of Khalaba Ward have expressed their gratitude for MCA Makhanu’s initiative, with many applauding the tangible difference the project will make in their daily lives. The reconstruction of the four springs will not only alleviate water scarcity but will also contribute to the overall development of the region, improving the quality of life for many.
