Dr. Cleophas Lagat, the governor for Nandi county, has said that the Nandi county government has engaged international lawyers to push for compensation of historical injustices against the Nandi people.

In a ceremony organized by elders and a section of Koitalel kinsmen at Maraba in Tinderet constituency, Dr. Cleophas Lagat said that his government is ready to sue the British government for compensation.

Lagat said Karim Khan alongside other lawyers will steer the case to ensure that Nandi people are fully compensated adding that the community lost their leader Koitalel along other 10,000 people and their livestock to the colonists.

He informed them that a team of lawyers spear headed by Khan will review available records and continue to collect testimonies from people in Nandi who claimed to have been mistreated by the British colonialists.

The Nandi community has several claims including; forced detention, rape and killings and land grabbing which may yet again force Britain, Kenya’s former colonizer, into a tight corner for its past misdeeds.

The Nandi people feel, as a community, that they suffered and continue to suffer the effects of colonialism claiming that the British colonialists murdered their leader Koitalel arap Samoei, detained others and forcibly acquired their land and property during the construction of the Kenya – Uganda Railway.

The Nandi community insists that they deserve compensation from the British government over historical injustices instilled to them during the era of colonialism.

Talai clan and Nandi community under Tinderet Nandi welfare association (TINWA) have vowed to push for compensation from British government for the torture and loss of property during the British colonialism.
