Khwihondwe Primary School in Mumias East Constituency will soon be closed following a directive from the Ministry of Health. The school, which is grappling with an alarming shortage of latrines, has been given just one week to construct additional facilities to accommodate the growing pupil population.
The decision was made after a health assessment revealed that all pupils were relying on a single latrine, with teachers resorting to using facilities at neighboring homes. According to the Ministry of Health, the situation poses serious health risks for both the pupils and staff.

Parents of the affected pupils have expressed concerns about the adverse impact of the sanitation challenges on the school’s academic performance. They report that the frequent disruptions due to inadequate facilities have contributed to poor results in national exams, affecting the overall success of the institution.

In response to this crisis, the school is urgently calling on local leaders, government officials, and donors to step in and provide the necessary assistance to resolve the sanitation issue. The primary school, which serves the local community, is now at a critical juncture, and its future depends on swift action from both the public and private sectors.
