In a bid to address the persistent challenge of poor mathematics performance among learners in Kenya, researchers have introduced an innovative teaching approach that leverages technology and data-driven strategies.
The Mathematics Instructional Practice Improvement Project (MIPIP) was officially launched at Kibabii University, bringing together mathematics teachers from various counties in the western region. The initiative seeks to enhance teaching methodologies, improve instructional practices, and empower educators with advanced knowledge.
Speaking during the launch, Kibabii University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odeo Ipara, emphasized the significance of the project, noting that its primary focus is integrating technology and data analysis into teaching. He highlighted that the project also includes a scholarship program for high school teachers pursuing master’s degrees, providing them with an opportunity to expand their expertise in mathematics education.
The program’s leaders, Bartholomew Lumbasi and Martin Wanjala, explained that MIPIP will equip teachers with data-driven techniques to analyze student errors and improve teaching strategies. Wanjala further stressed the need for gender balance in mathematics education, stating that the project will organize teachers into specialized groups to enhance learning outcomes.
Additionally, Lumbasi pointed out that the project aligns with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), ensuring that teachers are well-prepared for its full implementation at the senior high school level.
The initiative received strong backing from the Ministry of Education, with Audrey Namusonge, an officer in charge of quality assurance and standards, commending the program. She noted that MIPIP would play a crucial role in eradicating low grades that have historically plagued mathematics performance in the country.
As Kenya continues to reform its education system, projects like MIPIP are set to transform the teaching and learning of mathematics, ensuring that students develop stronger analytical and problem-solving skills for future success.
